Welcome to the Weekly Wine Quiz, thirsty ones!
As always, I supply the quiz question but not the answer, as YOU (to make this fun) provide your best guess as to the correct answer in the comments section. Then, tune in later today when I will reveal the official correct answer (usually along with some other interesting related trivia tidbits) in the comments. Have fun!
These Aren’t The Göncs You’re Looking For
The concentration of Hungarian Tokaji Aszú sweet wine was traditionally measured in the amount of puttonyos (or doughy grape paste) added to a Gönc cask to produce that batch of wine. What is the storage capacity of a Gönc?
- A. 50 liters
- B. 100 liters
- C. 136 liter
- D. 333 liters
Please note that this is not the same as “Gonk,” the walking-trashcan-shaped driod from Star Wars that was named #3 on IGN’s list of the best Star Wars background characters (but wait a second… Wedge Antilles behind that annoying Salacious Crumb puppet in the list?!?? C’mon, IGN, that’s sad – Wedge destroyed the Death Star, man!!!). At least, I’ve no confirmation that Gonk and Gönc have the same storage capacities…
Anyway… Cheers, and good luck!
E. 136.6 Liters ;-)
masi – busting out the calculator? :-)
c. 136 Liters, (Doesn't everyone know this????)
Paul – I think they teach it as part of the standard program in most schools, right? ;-)
In Hungary perhaps ;-)
Paul – :-). Hey, I'd attend that class!
C – 136 L :)
Thanks, Meara!
C. 136 liters
Thanks, Gary!
And here is your Official Wine Quiz Answer:
C. 136 liter
Seems all of the commenters are well versed in Hungarian wine storage!
Gönc barrels can hold 136 liters (okay, technically 136.6 litres!), and they are rarely tightly sealed. Fermentation in the Gönc can take years, usually happening in maze-like underground cellar carved out of rhyolite tuff.
Love the description "doughy grape paste".
James – thanks; new technical term there :-).
